When I first came to Leerdam, I saw it as an opportunity to simply produce more work, a time and space to explore what I had no time to do before. But the experience was a pleasant surprise to me, incredibly fulfilling, and involving a total change in the direction of my work.

Located in a cute studio space connected to a large balcony overlooking the courtyard and garden, with a cosy attic bedroom above, I had my own private quarters to live and create in. I was sometimes also able to use Thea’s large studio in ‘the shed’, and attend the wide variety of classes she offers.

I learnt new techniques using materials I had never used before, and discovered new ways of working. The most fascinating and influential ideas came from art therapy, and Hundertwasser, both greatly impacting, if not totally changing, my entire approach to painting. I also met local artists, and encountered the local glass-art, famous to the Netherlands.

I regularly took my camera on bike rides into the countryside which encircled Leerdam, and the forms and patterns of the Dutch landscape became the main source of my inspiration. Although I was there in winter, my work was as colourful as the summer, undoubtedly due to the vibrancy and playfulness of the Hofje.

If you are looking for time to learn and discover something new (about your work or yourself), or a chance to play and explore without pressure, or, even if you have clear ideas and suggestions as to how you would like to spend your time, I know that here all is possible.
